What Can I Do to Save Energy & Reduce Emissions?
|
|
|
Temperature: If you
have a thermostat, in the winter months turn it
down when you leave for the day and at night before
you go to bed. If your radiator is too hot, hit the
“problem” link below.
|
Lighting: Open the shades
and use natural light whenever you can. Replace your
inefficient incandescent bulbs with compact
florescent bulbs (CFB). They cost more, but last
10x longer. Only 10% of the energy used by an
normal light bulb generates light, the rest is wasted heat.
One CFB can save more than 260 lbs of CO2 annually.
|
Turn it off:
You can quickly reduce energy use and greenhouse gas
emissions by flicking the switch on lights, your computer,
television, and other electronic equipment when these
items are not actively in use.
|
Give your PC a break
Activate power management features on your
personal computer. Power management features place
inactive monitors and computers (CPU, hard drive, etc.)
into a low-power sleep mode. This takes less than 10 seconds
and can prevent the emissions of 965 lbs of CO2 per student.
Turn off your computer when not in use.
No, it does not harm your computer. In fact, it reduces
mechanical wear and tear.
Laptop computers use 50% less
energy than desktop models.
|
Unplug:
Electricity in a typical home is consumed while
the products are turned off because laptop and cell
phone chargers, TVs, stereos, and other electronics
continue to draw electricity from the grid when
plugged-in. Unplug your laptop and cell phone
charger when you are not charging the batteries.
Unplug your TV and stereo and other appliances
when you go out of town for a few days.
|
Wash: Run full loads
in washers and dryers. Use “warm” instead of “hot”
water settings whenever possible. Two loads per week
at warm instead of hot can avoid nearly 500 lbs of CO2/year.
|
Buy smart.
Energy Star labeled electronic equipment and appliances
use 35% less energy than standard models.
